“When you’re happy you enjoy the music but when you’re sad, you understand the lyrics”
Yes, music touches us in many ways. Picture yourself driving down
the road on a road trip with the music cranked, the sun shining on your
face, and the wind blowing through your hair. This is a perfect example
of us enjoying our music when we are happy. We are taking in the
beautiful scenery, feeling the beat and rhythm of the music itself, and
the songs that we are listening to are becoming the soundtrack for the
journey that we are taking. In the future, the next time we hear one of
these songs that are playing in the background, we will be instantly
transported to the very time and place of the road trip that we are on
and have the pleasure of reliving the experience all over again. Yes,
it is great to enjoy the music when we are happy.
On the flip side, when life brings us trouble, when we are faced with the challenges that are inevitable in life, we will again turn to our music to join us on this journey, but in an entirely different way. Now we will seek songs that comfort our souls. Music that speaks to us at a very personal level, either with or without lyrics. These songs will encourage us. They will remind us that others are on this journey of life with us. That others, too, have faced tragedy, that they have felt sadness, that they have experienced what we are going through now. And that, yes, they have made it through, as well. Because of this, our souls will find comfort not only in the sound of the music itself, but in the sense of community that we will feel in knowing that we are not alone. In the blessing of some other being expressing so beautifully for us, what they intuitively knew would be a segment of our journey as well.
Frank Ocean is right in his assessment of music here. It will be our comforter and friend both in the happy and sad times of life. May we always be aware and appreciate the blessings of music, on every road we take, in our journey of life.
